[ NETWORK CLASSIFICATION ]

Know what kind
of network it is

Every address comes back with the usage type of its network and of the company using it — hosting, ISP, business, education, government, CDN or military — and whether it sits in datacenter space. The signal behind bot filtering, fraud rules and traffic segmentation.

[ 01 — USAGE TYPES ]

Eight kinds of network

asn.type names the network that announces an address and company.type the organization that owns it, with one of these eight values. The two can differ: a business running on a cloud provider’s range is a hosting network used by a business.

hosting

Hosting and cloud

Datacenter and cloud provider space, from the hyperscalers to a rented box at a hosting company. Traffic from here is servers talking, not people, and is_datacenter is true for it.

isp

Consumer and business ISPs

The access networks that put people online: broadband, fibre and mobile carriers. Most human traffic comes from here.

AS2856 · BTAS7922 · ComcastAS206067 · Three UK
business

Businesses

An end-user organization’s own network: the company’s offices and its own servers, not a provider’s range.

Content delivery

Content delivery networks’ edge ranges, which serve content near the user rather than host it.

[ 03 — Attributes ]

Three fields, in the objects you already get

asn.type and company.type come with the network and company objects; is_datacenter sits in the threat object. All three on every lookup.

Classification3 fields

stringasn.type

The usage type of the network that announces the address: one of the values below.

stringcompany.type

The usage type of the company the address is assigned to, which can differ from the network’s: a business on a hosting provider’s range.

booleanthreat.is_datacenter

Whether the address belongs to a datacenter, including every cloud provider. A strong hint of automated traffic.

[ 04 — USE CASES ]

What the type is used for

01

Bot and automation filtering

Treat traffic from hosting ranges differently: rate-limit it, challenge it or score it before a human ever would be.

02

Sign-up and payment risk

A residential ISP address and a cloud address are different risks at checkout and registration. Weight them accordingly.

03

Ad fraud and traffic quality

Count impressions from datacenter and hosting space apart from the audience, and report what share of a campaign came from servers.

04

Audience segmentation

Separate consumer broadband from business networks, universities and government agencies in analytics and routing.

05

B2B enrichment

A business-type network with its company name tells you which organization is visiting, without a form.

06

Compliance and access policy

Apply different rules to government, military and education networks where policy or law asks for it.

[ 05 — PLANS ]

The network’s type on every plan, the company’s from Startup

asn.type and is_datacenter come with every plan. company.type is part of the company object, on Startup and above.
